Running Report 8th & 9th August

Well done to Louise - she led the Tuesday 7pm group last week - extremely well! I'm very grateful - especially as she's doing the same for me this week as I'm moving into our new home on Tuesday. Fast Track Beginners will be on Friday 19th at 8pm for the same reason.

It's the last RR10 this week - Hursley at 7:15pm. This is a 4-5mile off road run in the same series as the Itchen Valley one Louise did the other week. Pat, the fabulous coach from the main SRS group, does all of them at the speed of the gentlest runner - so there is guaranteed company and support at the back! I am intending to go this time. Directions are in this link.

Mon 7pm 6.17km in 41:52 505 calories
Mon 8pm 6.4km* 408 calories
Tue 7pm Some did 5km, some did 6km
Tue 8pm 3.78km in 32:41 218 calories

I haven't logged the time for Monday's 8pm run as there was a stitch issue! Thanks to the group for getting themselves back to the Hub - sorry I missed you at the end.

Fast Track Beginners
On Friday, we'll be:
  • Warming up
  • Running for 15 minutes
  • 1 minute walking break
  • Running for 15 minutes
  • Cool down
  • Stretching
Don't forget that we will take more breaks if required.

Last week's runs 1st & 2nd August

I always try to remember that having me cycling alongside is not without benefits - but I'm looking forward to actually running with you this week! Karen was a great navigator in the bit of southern Bishopstoke where I get confused!

Well done to Louise - I think she's the first Eastleigh group runner to do one of the RR10 club run series. She did the Itchen Valley one for SRS.

Monday 7pm 7.39km in 45:33 591 calories
Monday 8pm 6.40km in 44:39 437 calories (measured on bike - but most of you did 6km in this time)
Tuesday 7pm 5.31km in 38:07 383 calories (speedier runners - add 150m per loop back!)
Tuesday 8pm 3.87km in 35:45 208 calories

Fast track Beginners:
2 walking breaks this week:
  • Warm up
  • Jog 10 minutes
  • 1 minute walking break
  • Jog 10 minutes

Running Report 18th & 19th July

We were joined by 4 runners from SRS on Monday - Pat, Jennifer, Tina and Rachael. Pat's SRS's Chief Coach and she's suggested that she (or one of the other SRS coaches) join one of our sessions once a month or so. It's great to have this contact and I hope I can steal some coaching tips from Pat! I was disappointed that rubbish weather meant we weren't able to showcase a more scenic route to our fellow SRS runners this time.

Running around the World
We are making great progress across Turkey - now at Ilgaz, mountains in Central Anatolia.

Parking on Tuesday
Continues to be a real pain! Don't forget that you can park close to the Anglers Arms at Riverside & walk along the river to the hub.

Beginners
Fast Track Beginners kick in on 2nd August at 8pm - perfect if you've had a break & want 4 sessions or so to get back up to pace again!

Mon 7pm 7.22km in 46:36 598 cals
Mon 8pm 6.16km in 45:30 481 cals
Tue 7pm 6.26km in 45:13 511 cals

Another late running report

My feeble excuses this week include a rather over full diary & a trip to Northumberland this weekend for my Dad's 70th - but I'm sure a more organised creature would have still managed to blog.

News this week is that some SRS members intend to join us on Monday - it'll be great to meet them properly. I also have had confirmation that we are able to run in the RR10 series - but must be wearing an SRS top. The person who sorts out kit is one of the bods due to come along on Monday.

Even more exciting is that I am now allowed to inform you that Lizzy won't be running with us for a few months as she is expecting her second baby! It's the only reason for quitting running (hopefully temporarily) that I get extremely happy about.

Monday 7pm 5.89km 38:46 486 calories
Monday 8pm 6.00km 45:39 446 calories
Tuesday 7pm 5.58km 45:13 391 calories

Running Report 5th July

Eeks - late! But this does mean that I can congratulate Claire D for her PB at parkrun on Saturday - a most impressive 26:35.

Last Monday's runs - both of which took place in the woods, making the most of a dry, sunny evening. Appropriately, we're also ran virtually through a forested bit of Turkey too.

Mon 4th 7pm 6.83km in 45:52 567 calories
Mon 4th 8pm 5.33km in 40:06 439 calories

In Case of Emergency

This is a fabulous idea being promoted by the Ambulance service at the moment. I've set up my ICE on my phone - and I strongly suggest that you all do the same.

"We all carry our mobile phones with numbers and names stored in its memory. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn’t know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored, but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence the ‘ICE’ (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.

The concept of ‘ICE’ is catching on quickly. It’s a method of contact during emergency situations. As mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name ‘ICE’. For more than one contact name, simply enter ‘ICE1’ ‘ICE2’ ‘ICE3’ etc

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones with patients, but he didn’t know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognised name for this purpose.

In an emergency situation, Emergency service personnel and hospital staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as ‘ICE’.

Please forward this on. It won’t take too many ‘forwards’ before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one’s mind at rest."

Running report for 27th and 28th June

3 PBs to celebrate this week - Lisa at a 5K recently, Clare W & Joanne at today's parkrun - nice work all!

No running on Tuesday 5th July
I can't make it to Tuesday's run - apologies. But I'm very grateful to Louise HW who has very kindly agreed to cover for me for a couple of sessions that I can't make over the next couple of months - it's lovely to have the back up.
If Tuesdays are your normal slot, don't forget that you can always run on Mondays at 8pm instead - parking's much easier then too.

Beginners Programmes
These are already starting to fill up - especially Absolute Beginners. Thanks so much for referring your buddies.

2 New Beginner Programmes

Now we are properly re-homed with Southampton Running Sisters, I'm planning on 2 Beginner Programmes:
  • Fast Track: 4 weeks starting on Tuesday 2nd August at 8pm This is designed for women who can already run (gently jog!) for about 8-10 minutes, no matter how slowly. We'll get you to 30 minutes of running and to a point where you can transfer to our Improvers groups. Perfect if you've had a break from running or if you've worked to a point on your own where you'd like to try a club.
  • Absolute Beginners: 10 weeks starting on Tuesday 6th September at 8pm. If you've never run before, this could be the group for you! We start by alternating 1 minute of gentle jogging with 1 minute of walking - and build up gradually to 30 minutes of running.
Let me know if you'd like to join either - and do feel free to pass my email details on to anyone you know who may be interested - tidridge@gmail.com .

Running report 20th & 21st June

It's taken since January, but we are finally in Asia! We crossed the Bosphorus on Monday evening in Istanbul, which was cited as a possible reason for it being a bit warm & humid....

Congratulations to Louise - her coaching licence is finally through, so we have 2 qualified leaders for Eastleigh runs. And welcome back Patricia - it's fabulous to welcome back runners after a break, especially when they seem to do better than they've told me they will.

If you've not had a chance to register with SRS yet, here's a gentle nudge to do so. Don't forget that the address has changed - refer to my last email on the subject. Just need to to get my application in the mail now [guilt, guilt, guilt] so I can get access to the list of tempting events....

On Tuesday 5th July, apologies but I won't be running as I'll be doing a work thing.

Mon 7pm 5.26km in 35:19 428 calories
Mon 8pm 7.50km in 55:03 586 calories
Tue 7pm 5.55km in 47:37 368 calories

Runs on 13th and 14th June

We didn't quite make it to Istanbul, but we are so close! I underestimated the length of the European bit of Turkey...

I'm impressed with Clare L and Helen - both went running in the rain this week. The only reasons I dislike doing so is that my specs stream up and it renders off road routes too slippery to make my group run risk assessment.

I was also very grateful to the 7pm Monday group for taking the initiative to split us into 2 groups with 2 routes.

Parking
The Tuesday run in particular has been hit by a lack of parking - it's the changeover between yoga & aerobics classes combined with other events. Try to arrive in plenty of time, car share, cycle, walk - but I'm sure that all of you do who can! I'm going to stop bringing my car until I do another beginners' programme, but will still be able to accommodate a few car keys in my pack. The alternative parking spot I suggest is here. You'll recognise it as the bit of road in between the Anglers Inn and Glebe Meadow - it's about 2 minutes walk to the Hub from here & I can walk with you back to your car at the end of the session.
Fun fun fun.

Anyway, last week's runs:
Mon 7pm 4.38km/5.83km in 35:49/?? 284/?? calories
Mon 8pm 5.83km in 48:26 389 calories
Tue 7pm 6.18km in 45:51 466 calories

Saturday, 11 June 2011

Running Report 6th & 7th June

I was so pleased to see Anita back running with us again - and I'm hoping she brings some pics of baby Dylan with her next week. I am also looking forward to hearing about Clare L's Test Way run.

On our virtual global challenge, we're now in Turkey - but in the bit of it that's still in Europe. I'm pretty confident that Clare's run plus next week's will take us into Asia.

Mon 7pm 5.86km in 39:42, 484 calories
Mon 8pm 5.63km in 42:25, 428 calories
Tue 7pm 5.00km in 40:44, 347 calories

Tardy Running Report 30th & 31st May

Sorry to be so late... we have left Bulgaria now & are in Greece (but only briefly).

Mon 7pm 7.29km in 50:49 604 calories
Mon 8pm 5.67km in 41:41 451 calories
Tue 7pm 5.4km in 45:12 365 calories

Running report 23rd & 24th May

Gemma and Gillian did 5K on Tuesday - so that's 7 of the recently graduated beginners who have achieved this milestone - fantastic work!

Our Future
Don't forget to vote by 31st May with your preference. The link was in an email all of you should have received - and it's on our Facebook page. All members, including those on a break, can vote & please do so! Give me a shout if the link isn't behaving or if you need any more info. I'm so keen to sort this out so we can focus on the running again.

Saturday's Run to Winchester
9am from the Hub, running to the Old Gaolhouse pub in Winchester. If we have heavy rain today, tomorrow or forecasted for Saturday, I will postpone as it's potentially slippery on the tow path. I will put something here, FB and email those I think are coming if I do cancel. Fingers crossed....

Test Way Run 9th June
Clare L is organising this - contact her via our FB page or via me if you'd like to do a 7km off road run.

Run Around The World
20 of you ran last week, doing 140km between you! We've passed Sofia & are about halfway across Bulgaria already. Do have a look at the map if you haven't done so yet - it's immensely satisfying to see our progress across Europe.

The Week's runs - Downloaded from my GPS:
Mon 7pm 7.6km in 49:48 mins 639 calories
Mon 8pm 5.7km in 47:37 mins 363 calories
Tue 7pm 5.9km in 45:28 mins 409 calories
Don't forget that the GPS isn't bright enough to allow for terrain. Running off road burns more calories than tarmac - typically 10-25%.

See you on Monday (running as usual) or Tuesday.

It is make our minds up time!

You should find in your email a link to an online survey where you can vote for your preference on what we do as a club, following WRN going into liquidation.

Please only vote once! If you change your mind, let me know via email or text & I will amend the result manually. And please vote before end 31st May.

Do feel free to vote even if you've not been for a few weeks - or are on a break from running due to injury, babies or any other reason.

If you've not received the email, can't get the link to work or need some more informaiton, do give me a shout.

Running report 16th & 17th May

Congratulations to Eve, Kristine, Denise, Debbie and Sue - all of whom did their first 5K with us this week! Fantastic achievement.
If you were on the last Beginners' Programme & have missed a couple of sessions, do please feel free to come along to the Improvers' runs. I will ensure that you do a run within your ability - and nobody gets left behind!

Future of Eastleigh WRN
No news still from SRS on the beginner question yet.

Saturday 28th May 9am - Running from the Hub to Winchester
This will be a one way run, starting at the Hub, following the Itchen Way, & finishing in Winchester at the Old Gaolhouse Weatherspoons pub (bacon roll & a drink), hopefully by about 10:20.
From there, we'll either train back to Eastleigh or I have asked Phil nicely to meet us & take some of us back. It's about 11km.
As you know, this won't be much fun in the wet, so I will update this event on Friday night (27th) to confirm that it is happening.

We are out of Serbia!
Finally made it to the Bulgarian border. The virtual run around the world continues - we're heading for Sofia now.

This week's runs
Mon 7pm 6.16km in 41:45 mins 495 calories
Mon 8pm 5.5km in 42:33 mins 405 calories
Tue 7pm 5.00km in 48:40 mins 310 calories (I walked the second half)

Friday, 6 May 2011

Another holiday - and last week's runs

No runs with me on the 9th or 10th May - I'm off on holiday - again! I've got nothing to clash with running though booked so hopefully, no more disruption for a while.

Beginners' Graduation
The big news this week was the graduation of the Beginners. Nicolette, Sue, Denise, Eve, Gillian, Joanne, Sue and Kristine all ran for 30 minutes without a walking break - and I hope that they are all feeling justifiably proud! As of the 17th May, there will be no Tues 8pm runs. All former Beginners are very welcome to come along at 8pm on Mondays or 7pm on Tuesdays as Improvers. I am committed to ensuring that you continue enjoying running and that you are able to comfortably progress - don't be scared!

Cows
Second biggest news is that we herded cows bravely off the Itchen Way & back into their field! Thanks to Louise and Lizzy who were fantastic assistants. Helena will be so proud...

Club Future
I'm waiting for some clarifications from Southampton Running Sisters about beginners. I've also sent you all an email with the communication from Pauline Beare to all WRN leaders pasted in - let me know if it's not made its way to you.

Still Running Through Serbia...
We did 128km this week - but even so, Serbia seems to be going on for ever. We're aiming for the Bulgarian border and after that, one of my favourite cities, Istanbul.

The week's runs:
Mon 7pm 6.5km - sorry, no time or calories as GPS has had a problem
Mon 8pm 6.57km - sorry, no time or calories as GPS has had a problem
Tue 7pm 6.01km in 53:09 369 calories
Tue 8pm 3.54km in 30:49 191 calories

Holiday - and last week's runs

Hope all 7pm runners last week enjoyed the bluebells! I do love being able to get beyond the pavement as the evenings get lighter.
Holiday Disruption
I'm not running this Monday (25th) or Tuesday (26th) as I'm on holiday - so next runs will be on 2nd and 3rd May.
Southampton Running Sisters
Lizzie, Tory & I had a trial run with Southampton Running Sisters. If you'd like to give them a try, the Monday run on the 25th looks the easiest to find next week going from the Cowherds pub on the Common at 6pm (apologies, I can't make it). I've explained that we intend to pop along to their runs over the next couple of weeks. No session fee. I'd be very, very interested to hear how you get on.
Many thanks to Lizzie and Tory for joining me & sharing their views with me.
Coaching News
Good news - England Athletic have (finally) launched a level 2 coaching course focussed on road runners, so I'm hoping one will be organised within easy reach of here soon so I can do it. I hope that it will make me better able to support you in reaching your running goals.
Our Virtual Run Around the World
Runs last week
7pm 18th April 6.20km in 42:06 506 calories
8pm 18th April 5.77km in 44:51 420 calories
7pm 19th April 5.91km in 54:28 350 calories
8pm 19th April 3.54km in 31:04 198 calories
Beginners Programme
Final run won't be until Tuesday 3rd May at 8pm when we'll be tackling 30 minutes. Beginners should have had an email from me explaining the transition to the Improvers.

Runs from this week 11th & 12th April & news

I've had some good communications with Southampton Running Sisters about us becoming their Eastleigh offshoot. I'd like to spend the next few weeks getting to know each other & we'll make a decision by the end of May. I'm planning to try a couple of their Wednesday "Social Runs" as part of this - starting next week (from Solent Uni). You're very welcome to join me. I've also suggested that they come over & run with us. Details are here.

Bit of disruption is about to happen - I'm on holiday Easter Monday 25th & Tuesday 26th. Runs next week (18th & 19th) will all go ahead OK.

On our virtual world tour, we're now in Serbia, our 10th country. According to the Lonely Planet, "Serbia is yet to come within most tourists' comfort zone", so I guess we are pioneers! I love looking at the map - it's so impressive to see how far we've run.

Mon 11th 7pm 6.84km in 43:22 568 calories
Mon 11th 8pm 7.18km in 48:27 592 calories
Tue 12th 7pm 6.20km in 51:51 388 calories
Tue 12th 8pm 3.56km in 32:22 203 calories

Beginners Programme
31 minutes with 1 running break at 15 minutes. If you try this alone, do start gently!

Deciding our future

I've had clarification from England Athletics - WRN has indeed folded. I've booked Bishopstoke Community Centre for Thursday 7th April 7:30pm - 9pm so we can discuss our options. Map is here.

If you can't make it - or want to do some thinking beforehand, this summary shows the options as I see them (there are bound to be more I haven't thought of). Either email me with your preference or use this online survey before 6:45pm Thursday and I'll ensure that your views are taken into account.

I'm so sorry that this has happened - it's my aim to ensure that we carry on running, carry on enjoying running and that nobody is left out of pocket.
