Happy New Year!

The last Eastleigh WRN runs have been run! The Advanced group did a very slippery 5K on Monday - ice stopped the planned speedwork. The Standard Monday run covered 6K - which went better as we switched route. Standard Tuesday consisted of me & Louise - we took it easy as she is getting over a broken toe! The-Group-Formerly-Known-As-the Beginners did 5K - Anne's first and Angela's second with the group.

I'm now away. Don't forget that there is only 1 run next week which Julie is leading from the Hub at 7pm on Tuesday.

All the best, and here's to a fabulous year of running in 2010!

Another cancellation - sorry

Still too much ice for my liking so tonight's runs (Tuesday 22nd) are cancelled.

Hoping for a Tuesday thaw

Sorry about cancelling tonight - I decided to err on the side of caution - didn't want broken ankles on my conscience. Hoping that tomorrow (Tuesday) can go ahead as per usual with Standard at 7pm and The-Group-Formerly-Know-As-The-Beginners at 8pm.

Festive running

Thanks to all of you who braved the icefields of Bishopstoke yesterday for our Mince Pie Run. Admittedly, it was more of a walk with bits we could run, picking our way across frozeen ruts and boggy bits - and I hope your trainers clean up OK!

Big thanks to my caterer (Phil!).

Normal runs, normal times this week.

Last weeks's runs:
Mon 7pm 6.8km, 45:17 ascent 200m 560 calories
Mon 8pm 5.00km, 43:07, 286 calories
Tue 8pm 3.80km, 30:47, 240 calories

Cheaper than Running GPS gadgets

I'm not an iphone owner - but just in case any of you are, there are some apps that are much more cost effective options than a GPS running gadget! Only disadvantage is size - not quite so wrist shaped/scaled as a watch type gizmo.
  • RunKeeper - does everything my Garmin does plus easier web sharing. I was seriously tempted to get an iphone after seeing this! 2 versions - a free one & a "pro" not free one. Both get good reviews.
  • Go Pedometer is not GPS based - but this means that it will also work on an ipod touch. Not free, but not pricey!
  • iMapMyRun - uses GPS and is free.

Beginners Week 10 (wow!) and Info

Apologies but the 7pm Tuesday session is cancelled this week (15th December) as I won't be back from London in time and Julie can't make it either. Beginners at 8pm will be OK - I'll be in time for that session!

Don't forget the Mince Pie Run next Sunday (20th) at 3pm from my house - a gentle run suitable for all followed by mince pies and a glass or 2 of mulled wine.

Anyway, last week's runs - no calorie counts as I managed to record them as bike rides!
Mon 7pm 6.14km in 42:20
Mon 8pm 5.29km in 41:33
Tue 7pm 5.01km in 36:31
Tue 8pm 3.75km in 31:09

Beginners will be doing 30 mins straight up on Tuesday - but you can take a walking break if needed.

See you on Mon or Tue!

Wii fit exercises for running

I do like my gadgets - and a recent article in Runners World featuring the fabulous Jo Pavey had a workout - with some elements that I think can be done with a wii fit:

  • Form: improve your core muscles with Parallel Stretch (MW)

  • Form: hip alignment - Lunge (MW)

  • Form: core stability around hips - Bridge (Y)

  • Fitness: upper body strength - Press Up & Side Stand (MW)

  • Fitness: quad & glutes strength - Rowing Squat (MW)

  • Fitness: strength in calves and achilles - Palm Tree (Y)

None of the plyometric exercises had a direct comparison though!
